Licensing helps us increase sales
The easiest way to explain what licensing is is to do it through examples. “See the shirt that kid is wearing with the Mickey gadget on it? That’s licensing.” “See those Versace glasses? That’s licensing.” “You see that Phoskitos with the Pink Panther gadget and packaging? That’s licensing.”
Licensing surrounds us, although many times we do not realize or know what is behind those products or services. The technical definition would be the contracting of rights over a trademark for the use of the same applied to a certain category of products or services, during a certain time and place, in exchange for a pecuniary amount in the form of a royalty or royalty.
Although there are previous cases, the licensing industry as such began to develop significantly from 1930, when Walt Disney began to transfer the rights of its characters to manufacturers to incorporate them into their products. Currently, in the market we find many different types of licensing: art (Picasso and Dalí), celebrities (Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley), sports (Real Madrid and FC Barcelona), editorial (Harry Potter and Mortadelo and Filemón), digital ( Angry Birds and Skylanders), corporate brands (Coca-Cola and Nike), fashion (Dior and Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada) or music (Beatles, Justin Bieber and One Direction). But what does this industry contribute and to whom?
Licensing enriches the three parties involved in the transaction:
On the one hand, the product manufacturer-distributor (licensee) acquires a brand that allows its products to be impregnated with the values of that brand and, therefore, to be attractive to consumers interested in it. On the other hand, the owner of the brand (licensor) achieves new forms of income without having to make large investments, transferring the manufacturing and distribution rights of its brand to a third party. And, finally, the consumer manages to broaden their experience of relationship with a brand by purchasing a greater variety of its products.
